How to write vertically in Excel

It is a normal idea to write horizontally but sometimes you need to write text vertically in Microsoft Excel. Maybe you are making a graph chart or a book side label, you must type text vertically. Microsoft Excel has a fantastic feature to write text vertically or at the desired angle. It is a great way to rotate your text in a narrow column. Today, I will help you to learn how to write vertically in Excel. Let’s get started.
How to write vertically in Excel
- Go to the Home tab, you will find the tool Orientation that helps you to rotate your text as you like. You will see a drop-down menu with six options.
- Followings are the six ways you can rotate your text.
–1. Angle Counterclockwise
–2. Angle Clockwise
–3. Vertical Text
–4. Rotate Text Up
–5. Rotate Tex Down
–6. Format Cell Alignment
Angle Counterclockwise
- Select a cell, row, column, or range. Select Home> Orientation and then select the option Angle Counterclockwise. Your text will rotate 45 degrees counterclockwise. If you click again it will go back to its original position.
Angle Clockwise
- Select a cell, row, column, or range. Select Home> Orientation and then select the option Angle Clockwise. Your text will rotate 45 degrees clockwise. If you click again it will go back to its original position.
Vertical Text
- Select a cell, row, column, or range. Select Home> Orientation and then select the option Vertical Text. Your text will rotate vertically. If you click again it will go back to its original position.
Rotate Text Up
- Select a cell, row, column, or range. Select Home> Orientation and then select the option Rotate Text Up. Your text will rotate in an upward direction. If you click again it will go back to its original position.
Rotate Tex Down
- Select a cell, row, column, or range. Select Home> Orientation and then select the option Rotate Text Down. Your text will rotate in a downward direction. If you click again it will go back to its original position.
Format Cell Alignment
The Format Cell Alignment is the last option that we have under the Orientation menu. Click on that you will have another dialog box with a few options to customize your text orientation.
- Go to the Alignment tab you will find the following options
Text alignment: You can set your text properties of horizontal, and vertical modes like left, right, justify, center, etc.
Text Control: You can set Wrap text, Merge cell, Shrink to fit, etc. properties here.
Orientation: That is why you are here. Other options allow only 45 degrees rotation but here you can rotate your text in any direction (-90 to 90 degrees).
Bonus: Types of Text Alignment
Text alignment is related to this feature. That is why I want to include this feature here. In Microsoft Excel, there are six types of text alignments. It is under the Home tab, Alignment group.
Six types of text alignments are
- Top Align: Align text to the top.
- Middle Align: Align text so that it is centered between the top and bottom of the cell.
- Bottom Align: Align text to the bottom.
- Align left: Align your content to the left.
- Centre: Center your content
- Align Right: Align your content to the right.
